Lenzing subsidiary PT. South Pacific Viscose (SPV) opens fourth production line

Lenzing's subsidiary PT. South Pacific Viscose (SPV) officially started up its fourth production line at the beginning of April. A total of USD 150 mill. made the production line the Group's biggest individual investment project in recent years. Its annual nominal production capacity of 60,000 tons of viscose fibers for textile and nonwovens applications raises SPV's total annual capacity to 220,000 tons and makes it Asia's biggest viscose fiber production site and the world's second-biggest producer, after the parent plant at Lenzing with 255,000 tons per year.

Textile and apparel exports likely to grow this year

The growth of Indonesia's textiles industry slowed in 2007 as a result of increasing production costs and declining demand. "The performance of [the] textile, leather and footwear industries dropped 3.4% in the third quarter of 2007," said economic observer Faisal Basri. "In 2006, these industries experienced on average growth of 1.2%."

Sixteen companies to invest

Benny Soetrisno, chairman of the Indonesian Textile Association (API), reports that at least 16 large and medium-sized textile and clothing companies will expand their garment business this year with a total investment worth IDR1.1trn (US$118.6m). It is hoped this downstream expansion strategy will help minimise the impact of illegal imports of clothing.

INDONESIA - Rising demand drives viscose plants expansion

Rising demand for viscose rayon staple fibre in Indonesia is driving local fibre manufacturers to increase production capacity. Indo Bharat Rayon (IBR) of India's Aditya Birla group and South Pacific Viscose (SPV), which belongs to the Austria-based Lenzing> group, are the only producers of viscose rayon staple fibre in Indonesia. Both have reportedly been operating at full capacity for the past several years, turning out an estimaed 326,875 tons of fibre in 2006 and selling the lion's share of it to local textile manufacturers.
