Where possible, solid waste is sorted to recover saleable and reusable materials and to reduce the waste quantity. Remaining solid refuse is disposed of in a secure contained site ensuring total collection of groundwater and any leaching.

The primary process of solid waste comprises sludge and material waste handling. Dewatered sludge is fed to boiler burners for stabilisation. The ash disposal site has full containment and protection against contamination and release of surface or ground water. Failsafe provision is made for any contaminated water to be collected and diverted to the waste water treatment plant.
